MG YA, YB and YT
Geoffrey Gerald Palmer was responsible for adapting an Eight Series E four-door bodyshell and adding swept tail and rear wings. The engine was a 1250cc version of the 1140cc unit fitted to the Morris Ten. Issigonis also worked on the MG Y-type, and Alec would swap oiver with Gerald at BMC when Palmer fell out with Leonard Lord. Originally intended for a 1941 launch, the War delayed it until 1947 by which time it was out of date against rivals.

Despite already being classed as outdated by 1951 MG (part of the Nuffeild organisation, although not for much longer!) launched a revised "Y-Type" saloon, the MG YB. This "new" model looked identical to the earlier YA version, only small trim details distinguished it from the earlier cars.

ac_MG YT head
MG YT Tourer. All MG Y-types had the 1250cc XPAG engine used in the MG TB but in single carb detuned form. The YT tourer was given the higher tuned 1250cc MG TC engine.

MG YA front
MG YA. Project EX.166.started at Morris with Gerald Palmer was responsible for adapting an Eight Series E four-door bodyshell and adding swept tail and rear wings. Palmer was to develop some advanced streamline designs, including Jowett Javelin and Wolseley 6/90, but retreated from the curved front of the Morris Eight Series E and instead gave it traditional upright MG grille and lamps.

MG YA frontgg
MG YA. The YA was developed for launch in 1939 and then held back until 1947. The engine was a 1250cc version of the 1140cc unit fitted to the Morris Ten

MG YB front
MG YB. In 1951 the YA was revised to become the YB with hardly any visible differences. Changes were made to suspension and brakes and smaller road wheels were fitted, all to improve the handling.

MG YB rear
MG YB. This shot shows the -bustle boot- that Gerald Palmer added to give some extra style.

MG YT front
MG YT. Launched in 1948 the YT Open Tourer weighed less than YA saloon, and boasted a full MG TC spec 1250cc engine to make it faster. But it wasn't popular and never achieved the export sales it was designed for.

MG YT frontr
MG YT Tourer. Introduced in 1948, the YT offered a lighter car, and was given the higher tuned engine from the MG TC. Sales were slow, mainly for export, and only 877 cars the YT ended production as almost the last 4-seat open tourer made in Britain.

MG YT rear
MG YT. The YT used the same chassis as the YA, and in fact the YA had gone away from the trend towards unitary cobstruction

s_MG YA side
MG YA saloon. Design work started in 1937 with Syd Enever and Alec Issigonis, but World War Two prevented the intended launch in 1941, and buyers had to wait until 1947.

s_MG YB side
MG YB. Gerald Palmer's -bustle boot-, traditional bonnet and flowing front wings were added to an otherwise standard Morris 8 Series E body. In 1939 this seemed up-to-date but when the War permitted this to be launched in 1947, it looked rather staid.
