Morgan 4 - 4, 4/4
Morgan had introduced its first four wheel vehicle in 1936 as the 4-4 with a Coventry-Climax 1172cc engine, and this was offered as a 2-seater, 4-seater and a drophead coupe. Called '4-4' (later 4/4), the name signified '4 cylinders, 4 wheels' to distinguish it from previous 3-wheelers which often had twin cylinder engines. The 4/4 used the 1256cc Standard Special engine from 1938, and When this engine went out of production because Standard were concentrating on the new Vanguard model, Morgan took up this 2088cc 4-cylinder engine and produced their new Morgan Plus Four. The Plus Four signalled the end of the 4/4 until the 4/4 Series II was introduced in 1955 with the Ford 1172cc sv engine from the Ford 100E. In 1960 the Series III 4/4 was given the new 997cc ohv engine from the Ford Anglia 105E, and the Series IV model gained the 1340cc engine from the Ford Consul Classic in 1961. With the Classic being a short-lived car Morgan upgraded the 4/4 to series V specification with the 1498cc Ford Cortina engine in 1963. The 1598cc 'Kent' engine was fitted to the 4/4 1600 from 1968 and upgraded to GT specification from 1971. In 1981 there is briefly a Morgan 4/4 Twin Cam fitted with a 1600 Fiat engine which is replaced with the Ford CVH 1597cc engine in 1982, and in 1991 gains a fuel-injected Ford 1600 engine and 5-speed gearbox.
