Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft
Gottlieb Daimler went to work at Deutz AG Gasmotorenfabrik with his friend Wilhelm Maybach in 1872, where they invented the Spark Ignition engine for proprietor Nikolaus Otto. Daimler and Maybach left Deutz in 1882 with sizeable severance payment that funded their own experiments in Canstatt. In 1883 they had invented a single-cylinder four-stroke engine, and seeking capital to continue development they founded Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft in 1890 with wealthy partners. First Maybach and then Daimler left DMG after disputes, but Daimler kept all his patents and he sold these to FR Simms in Britain who founded British Daimler. However, Simms persuaded DMG to take back both Daimler and Maybach for their technical expertise. Tensions continued and the company split in 1898 into MMB and DMG, but when Gottlieb Daimler died in 1900 the two companies reunited once more under DMG. From 1902 the name 'Mercedes' was used for Daimler cars designed by Wilhelm Maybach until 1909 when Paul Daimler took over design.
