Lamborghini Countach
The Geneva Salon of 1971 saw the unveiling of the Lamborghini Countach, sanctioned by Nuccio Bertone, and launched to an extraordinary world. The name 'Contach' means 'Wow', and the LP400 certainly wowed the world. Marcello Gandini designed the body, whilst Dallara and Stanzani engineered the LP500 into the production LP400. Early production cars were the LP400 from 1974 with 3929cc V12 engine, and this had been given large air scoops to cure cooling difficulties not forseen on the show car. In 1978 the LP400 S was launched, acquiring wider tyres and added on wheel arches, plus an optional rear wing. In 1982 the LP500S was produced, changed mainly by getting the larger 4754cc V12 engine. A 5167cc quattrovalvole engine was given to the Countach 5000QV in 1985, and finally in 1988 the 25th Anniversary model was announced with many styling changes. Production ceased in 1990 when the Lamborghini Diablo replaced the Countach.

Lamborghini Countach 5000 QV. Produced from 1985 until 1988, the 5000 QV finally got the 5-litre V12 that had been intended back in 1971 with the LP500 concept. The QV body was largely unchanged, although it had gained fibreglass wheel arch extenders back in 1978 for the LP400S with wider P7 tyres

Lamborghini Countach 5000 QV. This QV has the vee-shaped rear wing which had been optional since the LP400S in 1978. Buyers considered the wing suited the car's looks, giving it more aggression. The true purpose of the rear wing was to add downforce to the rear wheels at speed and attempt to cure the tendency to leave the road in corners; the cost of doing this was a reduction of 10mph in top speed.

Lamborghini Countach 5000 QV. The 1971 LP500 project had considered a 5-litre V12 engine, but the Countach LP400 was launched with a 3929cc unit. The first '5000' engine came with the LP5000S (1982-85) which was fitted a 4754cc V12 engine. In 1985 the 5000 QV was announced with its engine enlarged to 5167cc and 4-vales per cylinder ('Quattro valvole'). The rear deck required a raised cover to accomodate the higher cylinder heads.
