Frank and Mike Costin
There were two Costin brothers, the younger teamed up with Mike Duckworth and together they founded Cosworth Engineering which created performance engines, including those that won several Formula One World championships. His elder brother Frank Costin also worked at de Havilland Aircraft and was persuaded by Mike to design the body for the Lotus VIII. Colin Chapman had been asked by Tony Vandervell to engineer a Formula One Grand Prix car, and Chapman engaged Frank Costin to do the body design; this car entered as the Vanwall, won the very first Formula One Grand Prix Constructors Championship in 1958. Frank did other designs for Vanwall. Frank tended to moonlight on projects rather than be directly employed, and at Lotus he collaborated on the design of the Lotus Elite to improve its aerodynamics, as well as worked on the Lotus Nine and Eleven. Frank Costin also worked with racing teams such as Lister, clothing the Lister-Jaguar 'Knobbly' with an aerodynamic body to produce the Costin-Lister for 1959. In 1959 Jem Marsh and Frank Costin formed Marcos cars and the first model used a plywood chassis built with the same techniques as the de Havilland Mosquito aircraft which both the Costin brothers had previously worked on. After leaving Marcos, Costin's consultancy produced many cars using the plywood chassis construction, but most of these were one offs. However the 1968 Costin-Nathan did get to a production of six cars, and the 1971 Costin Amigo achieved nine units. There was a wooden Formula Two car called the 'Protos' which had a canopy over the driver, and the 1971 March 711 had a Frank Costin body and a Mike Costin Cosworth engine at the back.

Costin-Nathan 1966. This is the prototype Costin-Nathan which was originally built as an open car and scored 5 class wins in 1966 and one second in class. Designed by Frank Costin. This car was built of aluminium, unlike production cars which were built in fibreglass. It was sold to a private owner in 1967 who returned it to the factory to have its body converted to GT spec, but wins eluded him and the car was parked up for 50 years.

Costin-Nathan GT 1966
Costin-Nathan GT 1966. Frank Costin, formerly a designer at Lotus, teamed up with Hillman Imp engine tuner Roger Nathan to build a racing car. Costin re-used his idea of a plywood chassis (from Marcos) and an open spyder raced in 1966 gaining 5 class wins in 6 outings. To compete at Le Mans in 1967 Costin had to design a closed body, hence the Costin-Nathan GT. Even though Frank Costin pulled out the project in 1968, Nathan continued with the project (sometimes called 'Astra GT'). This 1966 car has a Lotus Twin Cam engine

Lister-Jaguar Costin 1959. The Lister 'Knobbly' had appeared in 1958, it cumbersome design was a clever solution by Brian Lister to the problem of fitting a bulky engine with a tall bonnet to a low windscreen height which had been set by race regulations. The bonnet top was higher than the base of the windscreen, and there were valleys between the bonnet and the wheel arches. Frank Costin set out to streamline this car with his 1959 version, the Costin-Lister.
