Lister 'Knobbly'
The Lister 'Knobbly' had appeared in 1958, it cumbersome design was a clever solution by Brian Lister to the problem of fitting a bulky engine with a tall bonnet to a low windscreen height which had been set by race regulations. The bonnet top was higher than the base of the windscreen, and there were valleys between the bonnet and the wheel arches. The early 'Knobbly' cars were fitted with Jaguar XK engines, but as regulations changed and a 3-litre limit imposed the XK engine, even in special 3-litre form, could not compete. However, when a new 'free' class was announced the D-type engined Listers were back in business. Many Listers had gone to America and it wasn't long before the Chevrolet small-block V8 was fitted into a Lister 'Knobbly' and the Lister-Chevrolet was created

Lister-Chevrolet 1958 The first Lister Sports used an MG engine in 1954, but was more successful as the 2-litre Lister-Bristol. From 1957 the 'knobbly' was available with bulging wings to clear the wheels, and strengthened chassis to cope with the newly available Jaguar D-type engine. Other engines were available in the 'knobbly' including the Chevrolet Corvette V8 in this one.

Lister-Chevrolet 1959, 5300cc. Brian Lister drew the 'Knobbly' bodywork and sent it to Williams & Pritchard for construction in either aluminium or lighter magnesium-alloy. However, a fatal accident in 1958 that killed Lister's friend Archie Scott Brown was blamed by some on the flammability of the magnesium-alloy bodywork, although an inquiry did not find this.
