Vauxhall Victor FE
In 1972 the Vauxhall FE 'Transcontinentals' superceded the Victor FD. The new Victor shared its underpinnings with the German Opel Rekord D; very much the sign of times to come. An all new body seemed to be much larger than the outgoing Victor FD but in fact the overall dimensions increased only slightly whilst interior room was improved. David Jones was involved in the design of the FE, but at every phase Detroit insisted on commonality with Opel's Rekord D and Pontiac influence was clear. Engines from the FD slant four ohv unit were enlarged to 1759cc for the Victor 1800 and 2279cc for the Victor 2300. There was also a 3294cc inline 6-cylinder engine for the Ventora FE and the Estate car version which was badged 'Victor 3300SL'. The VX4/90 continued with a twin carb version of the 2300SL engine. A 'fastback' estate model was offered from the start, and when in 1974 the Victor underwent a refresh, a proper Ventora Estate with full trim was offered. In 1976 the 'Victor' name was finally retired after almost 20 years, and with new grille and quad lamps the Vauxhall VX1800 and VX2300 soldiered on. The 1800 was a slow seller so the engine was retuned and the car better trimmed, but the Ventora had been lost altogether. A revised VX490 model with 5-speed gearbox was introduced in 1977, but it was export only. In 1978 the FE range ceased production, at least in Britain, and in 1983 it emerged from a plant near Kolkata as the Hindustan Contessa and was sold until 2004 with Isuzu engines.

Vauxhall Victor 1974 2300 Estate rear
Vauxhall Victor 1974 2300 Estate. The Victor Estate was designed with an attractive 'fastback' rear, but this cut down capacity on my angular estates like the Ford Cortina. The Opel Rekord, which shared the Victor FE floorpan, went for a much squarer rear.

This explains the transatlantic theme to the styling, with elements resembling the concurrent Chevrolet Impala. However, a scandal involving rust and warranty claims with the Viva HC caused GM to pull the Victor FE from the North American market even before it had been launched.

Vauxhall Victor FD
Vauxhall Victor 1972 1800. The Victor FE was only a little larger than the FD, but it looked larger - too big for many buyers who went instead for the smaller Cortina. The rear windows could only be wound down about one third as there wasn't enough depth to drop the window all the way. The similarly styled Opel Rekord (which shared the floorpan) had quarterlights and thus enabled full drop windows.
