Vanden-Plas Princess 3-litre
Austin launched the Farina-designed Austin A99 Westminster and Wolseley 6/99 (ADO 10) in 1959. It was intended to also launch Vanden Plas versions of these cars, the Austin A120 and Wolseley 6/120 but these were cancelled at the last moment by Leonard Lord. Roland Fox then had the idea to launch a 'Princess 3-litre' model in its own right and got Vanden Plas designer John Bradley to design a grille for it. Exhibited at Earls Court 1959 the car was marketed soon after with the badge 'Vanden Plas 3-litre'. This was the ADO37 finished at Kingsbury. When the A99 and 6/99 were upgraded to A110 and 6/110 in 1961 the Vanden Plas 3-litre was also upgraded. For 1964 the Vanden Plas 3-litre was developed into the Princess 4-litre R (ADO 66) with Rolls-Royce sourced 4litre engine, but the 'Mini Bentley' did not catch on. 12703 3-litre Princess cars were sold and 6781 4-litre Princess R-types.
