Sunbeam-Talbot Cars
Sunbeam-Talbot is a complex combination of a British and a French car manufacturer with other companies thrown in for good measure. The 'Sunbeam' part had turned from bicycle manufacture to car manufacture in 1905, forming the Sunbeam Motor Company. The 'Talbot' name was given to car manufacture by an English Lord who went into business with Frenchman Clement-Bayard in 1903, producing English-sold 'Clement-Talbot' cars and French-sold 'Clement-Bayard' cars. The French business accepted a buyout from Andre Citroen in 1922 and the Clement-Bayard name was then lost. The Clement-Talbot business began to build its own designs from 1906, selling these as 'Talbots', but these became 'Talbot-Darracqs' after the Darracq buyout in 1919. In 1920 Sunbeam merged into this business to create Sunbeam-Talbot-Darracq (or 'STD'), a confusing mix of English and French companies. By 1935 STD were in decline, with only the Talbot brand successful in both sales and sports wins mainly due to their Swiss engineer Georges Roesch. William and Reginald Rootes bought Talbot out of STD in 1935, and started to use the chassis and mechanics of Hillman and Humbers as the basis of 'Talbot London' cars, giving them their own Talbot bodies. Meanwhile Talbot production continued in France under its new owner Anthony Lago who called his cars 'Talbot-Lago'. At this time in Britain the Rootes brothers rebranded Talbot cars as 'Sunbeam-Talbot' from 1938, but finally reverted to just 'Sunbeam' from 1955. French Talbot-Lago cars were made until 1960, coming under Simca ownership in 1958. In 1967 Chrysler Europe was formed out of the Rootes Group and Simca under Chrysler USA ownership, and both 'Talbots' were now back under a common owner. But it wasn't until 1979 that the 'Talbot' brand resurfaced as new owners Peugeot took off all the Chrysler badges; a consequence of this rebadging is that from 1979 to 1981 there was a Talbot Sunbeam car..
