Renault 15 and 17
Projet 117P came out of the dust left by a cancelled plan for a new Renault-Alpine-Gordini car, and the coupe part of the RAG venture evolved into the Renault 15 and 17. Gaston Juchet had his design chosen for Projet 117P and during the development it was decided the split the car into the two models; 15 and 17. The 15 TL coupe was given the 1,289cc engine from the Renault 12, whilst the 15 TS and the 17 TL got the 1,565cc engine from the Renault 16 TS. The fastest car was the 17 TS which got the Renault 12 Gordini 1,565cc injected engine. In 1975 the 17 TS receives the larger 1,605cc engine from the Renault 16 TX; this was called Renault 17 Gordini from 1974. The simplest design is the 15 with rectangular headlamps and long side windows, whilst the 17 is more radical with a rear quarter louvred side window and quad lamps. A 17 Decouvrable is offered but in fact this is just a roll-back canvas roof panel. The inset grille is restyled in 1976 and the 17 TL became the 17 TS with detuned 1,647cc engine. Sales ended in 1979 after 300,000 were sold with 67 per cent being Renault 15.
