Mercedes-Benz 230 SL (W113)
The famous 'Pagoda' 230 SL took over the SL place in the Mercedes catalogue from 1963 replacing both the 300 SL roadster and the 190 SL. Famous for the concave roof to its hardtop the W113 SL was even less 'light' and even less 'sporting' than the 190 SL and actually had added strength for safety. Friedrich Geiger was in charge of the design and the concave roof of the 'pagoda' hardtop, although design is credited to Paul Bracq , and the hardtop was possibly penned by Bela Barenyi. The W113 replaced an earlier W127 project that was aborted so that a fresh start was made on W113. However, the platform was based on a shortened W111 'fintail' with the mechanics from the 6-cylinder W112. The 230 SL was launched at the Geneva Salon in 1963 with the 2308cc M127 6-cylinder engine. In 1967 a new 2496cc 6-cylinder engine was given to the car and it was renamed '250 SL'. Later in 1967 the 280 SL was announced with a 2778cc engine. After almost 49,000 had been sold it was replaced by the 350 SL (R107) and 500 SLC (C107) in 1971.

Right from the start the Automatic gearbox was a popular option and by the end of the Pagoda range the auto box was accounting for 77per cent of sales.
