Mercedes-Benz W114 and W115
Paul Bracq designed the Mercedes-Benz W114 (6-cylinder) and the W115 (4-cylinder). They were launched as the 'New Generation' models and really did use an all new chassis, and did not carry over from the 'Fintail' models. Launched as a 4-door saloon in 1968, this was supplemented by a pillarless coupe from 1969 as the 250C, 250CE, 280C, 280CE. An extended wheelbase limousine was also offered as a factory model and proved popular as a Taxi. In 1973 the W114/115 was facelifted with a lower and wider grille, lower headlamps, revised c-pillars and grooved rear lamps. The W114 was available with 2.3-litre, 2.5-litre, and 2.8-litre 6-cylinder engines, the bigger cars were also available with Bosch electronic ignition from 1969. The 4-cylinder W115 cars could have 2-litre or 2.3-litre engines, or 2.0-litre, 2.2-litre, 2.4-litre Diesels. The diesels were a big seller under the bonnet of 350,000 sold mainly as taxis. The W114/115 sold 1.8million plus 67,000 coupes until replaced by the W123 in 1976.
