Ford Zephyr Mk1 (EOTA)
In 1951 Ford launched the Consul MkI (EOTA) with a 4-cylinder 1508cc engine, and a body designed under George W Walker from Dearborn. A 2262cc 6-cylinder version was introduced as the Ford Zephyr Six using a longer bonneted version of the same body, and the better equipped Zephyr Zodiac (EOTTA) followed in 1953. Carbodies made convertible versions of the car, and ED Abbotts of Farnham turned Consuls and Zephyrs into Estate cars. The cars were advertised as '5-star Fords' because (1) they had a monocoque body, (2) lower body and better handling, (3) MacPherson strut suspension, (4) Hydraulic brakes on all four wheels, (5) new short-stroke high revving engines. Production ended in 1956 when the MkII range was launched.

Ford entered a new era in 1950 with its all new, mould breaking Consul/Zephyr range. Both the cars were completely new and were based on the same unitary bodyshell structure and shared a common engine design. The marketing material proclaimed that the cars had "5 Stars", this referred to five all new features including Unitary Construction, MacPherson suspension and an OHV engine. The Zephyr shared the new bodyshell with the four cylinder Consul, although due to its longer engine the front wings and bonnet were actually 4" longer than the Consul.
