De Tomaso Cars
Alejandro de Tomaso came from Argentina to Modena and founded De Tomaso in 1959. The first car was the the Vallelunga sports car which used a Ford Cortina engine, and this was superseded by the mid-engined Mangusta powered by a Ford V8 after de Tomaso struck a deal with Ford USA. From 1971 to 1973 Ford dealers in America sold the De Tomaso Pantera. Ford terminated this deal in 1973 and De Tomaso carried on with low volume runs of its cars. In 1976 De Tomaso took over Maserati after Citroen offloaded it, and Innocenti had been purchased in 1975. Fortunes fell, and in 1996 De Tomaso was forced to look for investment and went with Bruce Qvale, but it was not a friendly partership and the De Tomaso name was lost and finally went into liquidation in 2004.
