Roy Haynes joined BMC after he's completed the Ford Cortina MkII, and the Ford Zephyr/Zodiac MKIV. The management of Issigonis wanted the same kind of 'conventional' styling for their products. He was first asked to try and save the Austin Maxi, which even Pininfarina failed to do. The Haynes team did sort out the front of the Maxi, eventually almost twinning it with the Mini Clubman which Haynes did next without getting his hatchback rear approved. Roy Haynes designed the Morris Marina, a replacement for the ageing 'Farina Austins', but the vision of Haynes was a BMC Escort rather than the larger cars.
