Austin A90 Atlantic
Austin's grand car to conquer America with a transatlantic coupe on top of A70. Leonard Lord is supposed to have sketched an outline of the Austin Atlantic before passing it onto Dick Burzi for completion. It is thought that the Lord was inspired by an Alfa Romeo Pininfarina Cabriolet, and he set out to design a car for sales in North American. A 4-cylinder 2660cc engine was developed from the 2199cc Austin Sixteen and Austin A70 unit, and was subsequently given to the Austin Healey 100. Launched at the 1948 London Motor Show, the A90 Atlantic convertible was immediately put in the shade by Jaguar's own convertible offering, the XK120. For 1949 Austin revealed the A90 saloon which was a 2-door coupe featuring a winf-down central section to the rear window. The Atlantic was a flop, and even the publicity from breaking 63 speed and endurance records at Indianapolis did not generate sales, production ceased in 1952 after less than 8000 cars.

Austin's Leonard Lord was supposed to have sketched the Atlantic design, but more likely it is the work of their own Italian designer Dick Burzi probably influenzed by a Pininfarina-designed Alfa Romeo (http://www.spideralfaromeo.it/schede/1938a.htm) a version of which was known to have been at the Austin works in 1947.
