Alpine (Societe des Automobiles Alpine SAS)
Jean Redele, son-in-law of a French Renault dealer, commissioned an aluminium body on a Renault 4CV chassis with coachwork designed by Giovanni Michelotti and built by Allemano. In this car he won The second car, known as 'The Marguis' was an attempt to build that car out of fibreglass in America by Zark Reed a builder of fibreglass boats. This car was exhibited at the 1954 New York Motor Show, and is powered by a Renault 4CV 747cc engine. But this car does not go into production. In 1954 Redele won the Coupe des Alpes in his own car and thus chose the name 'Alpine' for his brand. However, his first production car, the Alpine A106, was actually commissioned by his father-in-law Charles Escoffier and designed by Jean Gessalin then built by the Chappe brothers and sold by Renault dealers. Société des Automobiles Alpine SAS was registered in 1955. A cabriolet version of the A106 was designed by Giovanni Michelotti, and Alpine designed a closed Berlinette body from this to be called the Alpine A108. Alpine developed the A110 in 1962 to be based on the newer Renault 8, and an evolution of this car won the 1973 World Rally Championship as the Alpine A110 1800. Renault took over Alpine 1973 at the time of the Petrol Crisis and launched the A310 and later A610, but Renault 'rested' the Alpine name in 1995 until relaunching the brand in 2017 with a brand new A110 model.
