Reliant Scimitar

Reliant needed a replacement for the aged Reliant Sabre, and when the managing director spotted the Ogle SX250 concept at the 1962 London Motor Show, he was interested. The SX250 was built on Daimler SP250 components as a private commission and only two cars were built because Daimler was not interested in series production for it. Ray Wiggin approached Ogle Design and bought the design which was adapted to fit the Reliant Sabre chassis and the Ford Zodiac 2553cc 6-cylinder engine with triple SU carburettors. The car was launched as the Reliant Scimitar at the 1964 Earls Court Motor Show. Ford stopped production of the straight-six engine in 1966, and that year Reliant upgraded the Scimitar to carry the 2994cc Essex V6 from Ford, and then produced a less expensive option with the 2495cc V6 from 1967-70.

$Ogle Design - David Ogle founded Ogle Design in 1954 and sta\rted designing and producing cars from 1959. David Ogle was killed in a car crash in 1962, and the company was then managed by Tom Karen who became chief designer Ogle stopped manufacturing and produced designs for others make, the first of these being the Ogle SX250 designed for Daimler but taken up by Reliant instead. That started an association with Reliant that led to the Scimitar and the GTE, with the Reliant Robin and Bond Bug on the way. Tom Karen also did the Panorama Elite for Plaxton Coaches and then the Dominant for its rivals Duple. In 2000 the design operation was sold to a Swedish company to become Ogle Noor, whilst Ogle continued in the UK on Research and Development.$
