Reliant Scimitar GTE and GTC
Ogle Design had exhibited an Ogle Design GTS Estate at the 1965 London Motor Show as a study with Triplex Windscreens. Reliant's Ray Wiggin then asked Tom Karen of Ogle to work this GTS concept up into a production model and in 1968 the Reliant Scimitar GTE was exhibited at the London Motor Show. The Scimitar was given a new chassis and improved suspension, but retained the Essex 2994cc V6 engine from Ford. There was an upgrade to the GTE in 1972 and slightly more power. Princess Anne was given a Reliant Scimitar GTE in 1970 for her 20th birthday and went on to own 9 GTEs in total. From 1975 to 1986 the new SE6 GTE was produced, having a 4inch longer wheelbase and being 3inches wider. From 1980 the GTE used the 2792cc V6 'Cologne' engine from Ford as the Essex had gone out of production. In 1980 Reliant launched the Scimitar GTC which was an open top version of the GTE SE6. This SE8 model had been commissioned from Tom Karen at Ogle Design from 1977, and 442 were sold before production ended in 1986.
