Pontiac Firebird 1967-69
John DeLorean wanted Pontiac to have a two-seater sports car to sell below the Chevrolet Corvette. In fact the Firebird was a Chevrolet Camaro F-body with Pontiac branding. Launched in February 1967 the Firebird was slightly more developed than the Camaro with improved suspension and relocated engine. The Firebird 400 was the most powerful with the 6.6-litre 325bhp V8 from the Pontiac GTO, the base unit was a 3.6-litre inline six, and there were 5.3-litre and 5.7-litre V8 engines with two or four barrel options and 'Ram Air' configurations. A 'Trans Am' model was added in 1969 with a handling package and styling package and became one of the most famous Firebird models. For 1968 Firebirds lost their front quarter lights, gained wraparound front turn lamps, and had Pontiac arrowhead logos aft of the rear wheel arches. Firebirds for 1969 gained a new grille with separately podded headlamps to the side of twin rectangular grille openings. Late in 1970 a brand new Firebird was launched after almost 278,000 of the first edition had been sold, of which about 25 percent were convertibles.
