Jaguar XJ Series II
In 1973 the Jaguar XJ model underwent its first major change and became the Series II. Most significant was the new high mounted front bumper with a squat grille above it; there were changes to the boot and rear lamps too. Under the bonnet the 2.8-litre was dropped from the XJ range, excepting 170 cars which just made it into the Series II production. A long wheelbase version became virtually the standard model, and more than half the 127,000 Series III XJ were built on the LWB platform. The defunct 2.8-litre XJ6 was replaced by a 3.4-litre model from 1975, and in the same year the V12 models gained fuel injection. The XJC Coupe model, built on the short wheelbase chassis was produced from 1975-77. Fuel injection was given to the XJ6 4.2-litre from 1978, and in 1979 badging for 'XJ6' and 'XJ12' was replaced by 'XJ 4.2' and 'XJ 5.3'. In 1979 the Series III took over on the Jaguar XJ production line. Daimler models were sold as 'Sovereign' (six cylinder engines) and 'Double Six' (V12 engines), and Vanden-Plas versions of the Double Six were available from 1973 and from 1975 for the Daimler 4.2 Vanden-Plas.

From the launch of the Series II in 1973 until 1975 the only 6-cylinder model offered (excepting just 170 XJ6 2.8) was the 4.2-litre, and almost half the XJ Series III were long wheelbase 4.2-litre with just 10 percent of 4.2 production being the shorter XJ6 4.2.
