Packard Single Six
Packard went down market in 1920 with a new range of cars built on a 116-inch wheelbase and powered by a new six cylinder 3,957cc engine. But the car was too small to appeal to buyers, especially at Cadillac prices. For 1922 Packard revised the Single Six with a larger 4,398cc engine and wheelbases of 126-inch (for 5 passengers) and 133-inch (for 7 passengers). A dramatic increase in sales of these small Packards in 1922 (13,433 against 6,374 in 1921, and just 1,000 in 1920) encouraged Packard to leave the recipe alone for 1923 when 14,123 Single Sixes were sold. There was also a 'Double Six' Packard which in fact has 12 cylinders. In 1923 Packard decided to replace the Double Six with a new 'Single Eight' which had a more powerful L-head 8-cylinder engine on a 136 or 143 chassis with brakes on all four wheels. Packard then uprated the Single Six for 1924 with the chassis refinements of the Single Eight and produced the Packard Six-226 on a 126-inch wheelbase. Small refinements were made in 1924 (Six-326) and 1925 to the Single Six (35,000 sold) and Single Eight models.
