Ford Fairlane 1955
'Fairlane' was a new name for Ford in 1955, replacing 'Crestline' at the top of the Ford lineup. 1955 cars came with new bodies on a 115.5-inch wheelbase which were shared with the cheaper Customline. In fact these bodies were re-worked 1954 designs, first launched in 1952; there was a new chassis. Ford had given its Y-block V8 engine to Lincoln cars in 1952, and then to Mercury and Ford in 1954. One new body for Fairlane was the Crown Victoria, a 2-door coupe which could be ordered as a 'Skyliner' with a tinted plexiglass roof over the front seats; it sold poorly whilst the metal-roofed sibling was popular. Restyling for 1956 was modest, with new grilles, new chrome trim and a new 4-door hardtop (Town Victoria). Ford offered a 'Lifeguard' safety package of seat belts and padding, but it didn't sell very well. The 1957 Fords had new metalwork and a new chassis.
