Ford 100E (Anglia, Escort, Prefect, Popular, Squire)
Launched in September 1953, the 100E Ford Anglia was a major stepforward from the Anglia that had originated in the 1930s. The 4-door Prefect followed in December 1953 and was better equipped The monocoque body was designed by Lacuesta Automotive. There were 2 versions, the plain 2-door Ford Anglia and the better trimmed 4-door Ford Prefect, both gaining the 10hp 1172cc side valve engine. The original Ford Anglia continued in production and was sold as the Ford Popular 103E with the 1172cc engine. In 1957 Anglia and Prefect were revised with larger rear windows, new rear lamps and other trim changes. When the 105E Anglia was launched in 1959, the 100E Anglia was re-introduced as the 100E Popular to sell underneath the new car, and the 107E Prefect was introduced, using the engine, gearbox and back azle from the 105E Anglia in the 100E Prefect bodyshell Two estate cars were available from 1955 with lift-up rear windows and drop-down tailgates, the Ford 100E escort based on the 100E Anglia and the wood-trimmed Squire estate based on the more expensive Ford Prefect. There was also a 300E Van version from 1955 in either 5cwt or 7cwt guise. Production finally ceased in 1962 after almost 1million units.
