Buick Limited 1958
The first 'Limited' was introduced in 1936 when Buick decided to name all their cars; it was given to the Series 90 Buicks which already competed with the larger Cadillacs. Pressure from Cadillac saw the 'Limited' name put into storage in 1942. Buick re-introduced the name 'Limited' only for the 1958 model, and thereafter it was applied to other models to mean ultimate specification. All 1958 models gained huge amounts of chrome and this extraordinary Fashion-Aire Dynastar grille comprised of 160 chrome squares. But only the Limited had rear flanks of body coloured panels (instead of chrome) containing 15 slanted slashes. The Limited was Buick's biggest car, a lengthened version of the C-body Buick Roadmaster on the same 125inch wheelbase, but with a longer boot making it even longer than a Cadillac Sixty-Two. Harlow Curtice was at the helm of GM when the Limited was proposed and as previously the design chief of Buick, he would have supported the plan to push Buick higher in the market - some Limiteds cost more than Cadillacs. 1958 was a bad year for all American car makers, and only 7400 Limiteds found buyers; for 1959 the Electra 225 was created.
