Aston Martin 15/98 (2-litre)
Aston enlarged the Renwick and Bertelli engine to 1949cc for the 1936 24 heures du Man, but this race was cancelled. A production 1998cc version engine was given to the new 15/98 model launched at Olympia in autumn 1936, and 50 4-door saloons were sold. However the car had a few problems, and buyers did not like the pedestrian lines of the saloon, nor its poor speed. E Bertelli bodied the saloon and also a 15/98 2-door tourer that was also launched. Bertelli was the brother of Aston's engine designer and had premises near to Aston Martin. Abbotts of Farnham also built 25 drophead coupe models. In 1937 A.C. Bertelli resigned from Aston Martin, and contracts with his brother to build bodies also ended which let in other coachbuilders. At the inaugural 1937 Earls Court Motor Show Abbey Coachworks presented a short chassis 2/4-seater which sold 50 copies. Aston Martin developed a new version of the 2-litre for the 1936 Le Mans race and was required to build 25 cars for homologation. The 1936 race was cancelled so Aston Martin marketed 23 of these cars as 'Speed' models to sell them off.
